Shelter
By Don Kennel
The Santa Fe Animal Shelter commissioned artist Don Kennell to create a sculpture in the Railyard Plaza as part of their 2016 fundraising campaign. Consisting of an array of cubes rendered out of steel tubing, some containing colorful cats and dogs, the piece was meant to remind viewers that the Animal Shelter had many animals waiting for homes. The modules stacked to create a sense of motion and aliveness, while some rectangles were left empty to encourage people to imagine their own pets in the space. The sculpture was on display for the one-month fundraising campaign; as the campaign reached various goals, the sculpture grew in size and complexity.
