SHELTER

The Santa Fe Animal Shelter commissioned artist, Don Kennell to create a sculpture for the shelter as part of a fundraising campaign. The sculpture consisted of an array of three-dimensional cubes and rectangles rendered out of steel tubing. Visually, this structure represented our larger community. Some of these cubes contained colorful versions of shelter cats and dogs.

The sculpture created a series of spaces that were symbolic of both the enclosures at shelters and of the home. While these rectangular cubes were not cages, they remind us that Santa Fe Animal Shelter has many animals waiting for homes. The modules stacked to create a sense of motion and aliveness. Some rectangles were empty, to encourage viewers to imagine their own pets in the space. The sculpture was on display for the the one month fundraising campaign. As the campaign reached various goals, the sculpture grew in size and complexity.
